China

Editor’s note

I wrote these travel blogs in my 20s for a small, password-protected audience. They contain descriptions of drama and potentially unflattering caricatures of everyone involved. Parts of it are entertaining, parts are cringey, parts I’ve edited out, but most of it I’ve left alone because these events happened over a decade ago and I’m sure everyone has matured and moved on.

    Don’t take it so literally

Let me set things up, as well as dish you a little bit of the dirty drama, which let’s be honest, is what you’re here for. And I will tell all. I’m not even going to come out of this looking good. How long I was in China

    The room where it happened

I think it’s important to have an understanding of the space. Cut-off text reads: “Weird in-between room with nothing in it.” Here is the apartment. I made the bathroom in the upper left corner look way bigger than it wa

A hilarious entertaining not-at-all boring introduction to the culture of Jinan China

A lot of Americans who go to China don’t go outside Beijing. One Chinese tour guide told me that Beijing is like the NYC of China, very international and classic. Shanghai is like the LA, the “newer” city, up and coming,

The crisis of my living situation

It’s 3am and I should be sleeping. I watch a show that streams live on Twitch and it went late tonight, so I got to bed late, and then I was thinking about what I would blog about next… you know, some pleasant remembranc

    Getting there

Several of the people who are reading this are referred through my social media channel, and on my social media channel I already briefly described the horrors of my travel to China. They will find this post redundant, u

    Food, smog and claustrophobia

Over and over, Jesse had told me how cheap the food in China was. He’d told me how good the food was too. How he would go to this shop that made homemade noodles and could get a whole meal for $1.50 and have leftovers. H

    Cleanliness is next to godliness

I wish I had taken any pictures of that apartment. I know I thought about it several times, but when the time came down to it at the very end, I’m sure I was just like, Fuck this place, and left. I did, however, get a pi

A lesson begun to be learned

I used to blog a lot. I am familiar with the feeling of reading a post one has written 5+ years ago and thinking, Wow, I was an idiot. Wow, that situation wasn’t nearly as simple as I thought. Wow, what a forced triplet.

    Day tripper

My guilt about Cano in the last post looks dramatic. He thought I had a crush on him? Really, Jaimie? That’s going to start a credibility war between you? No, no. It’s because I chickened out. You didn’t hear everything.

I guess this is called racism

I have taken a longer hiatus from writing than I intended to, but a trip to Iceland requires a lot from one. I have learned that. I have also learned I will take 1 week in Iceland to 1 month in China every day every day.

Thanksgiving comes but once a year

The dates of my stay in China were such that I was missing Thanksgiving back in the States. This was very sad to me even before China became the rotten hell that it was, because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I ass

    The good times, part 1

I took surprisingly little photography in China, but I’m pretty sure I took at least a cell picture of every fun thing we did. A lot of these fun things involve food, because I love food. The one fun thing I did that I d

    Leaving: the first half

[Editor’s note: Redacted some drama.] But about leaving China… I was so excited about this. My mom, who felt sorry for my China misfortunes, and the unexpected expenses which was a misfortune all its own, was nice enough

    Leaving: the better half

Let’s just get out of this place already, okay? I’m limiting myself to 25 pictures for this whole post. Appreciate that. This question was floated in the last post: Did Jesse and Jane arrive on time? No. No, they did not
